Change of Plans...

"Sometimes your plans don't work out because God has better ones." -Anonymous

It’s funny how we can pray everyday and yet be so disconnected from God. But we’ve been talking to Him, right?  So there’s no way we can’t be “in tune” with Him, right?  Except…..what exactly are we seeking God for? Our will or His will? When we associate our desires apart from God we're actually limiting ourselves to the things that our finite minds can think of as opposed to the infinite wisdom of God. We want our own way so bad that we allow the devil to convince us that what God desires for us won't measure up to the grand plans that we have for our lives.  This couldn't be more false.  The devil's greatest attack on us is to somehow get us to believe that God is withholding something good from us.  We often throw tantrums with God for closing a door that we deemed as "good" not realizing that God was only protecting us from something we thought we could handle.

"We make our own paths first and THEN try to trust God, then wonder why things never work out."

There have been too many times to count that I've hesitated on going to God first with the desires of my heart.  Sounds silly I know, but that's only because I was more interested in what Leah had planned and was afraid that God's desires would mess them up. Like if I prayed for God's will I'd be on the first thing smoking to Zimbabwe on a missions trip (absolutely no offense to those who are called to ministry in Zimbabwe lol). It's as if we've convinced ourselves that our way is better than God's way.  We tend to get Proverbs 3:5-6 backwards.  We make our own paths first and THEN try to trust God, then wonder why things never work out.

"When our hearts intent is to please God first, THEN He grants us the desires of our heart."

One of my favorite scriptures and also one of the most wrongly used scriptures is Psalms 37:4, where the psalmist says, “Take delight in the Lord and He will give you your heart's desires.”  We hear that scripture and we run with it….so much to the point that we skip through the beginning part and focus on the latter.  We're so quick to forget that, “delight yourself in the Lord,” which is SO key!  The word “delight” by definition means to “greatly please.”   When our heart’s intent is to please God first, THEN He grants us the desires of our heart.  Why? Because those desires are coming from Him.  When we make it our mission to serve God first, He begins to plant specific desires in our heart....and the beautiful thing is…..it will all be for His glory.

Stop allowing the enemy to convince you that God won't give you His best in every area of your life. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God has "plans for good and not for disaster." When you seek God first for EVERYTHING, you'll never be off-track or off-schedule, you'll be exactly where He wants you to be. Remember: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not depend on your own understanding.  Seek His will in all you do and He will show you which path to take.......and I guarantee you, His path is worth taking.

Chances

So every now and then I like to share a song that's been heavy on rotation on my ipod.  Often times we take God's grace for granted, but what would it be like if we really ran out of chances to get it right with God?  I don't know but I'm glad for a patient God who loves enough to help us get it right.  Enjoy!!

Why do I do things that won't bring me closer to You
No reason or excuse for most of them so I do them
Responsible for my part in pushing You away
And when I deserve to be left alone, You stayed

Couldn't help but notice something
That just keeps happening
Doesn't make much sense to me
But He does it again and again

Lord, I promise this is really the last time
(We've all said these words)
Sorry for not praying, it must have slipped my mind
(I never wanted You to hurt)

If You get me out of this one
I'll never do it again
When will I learn my lesson?
What would life be if I ran out of chances?

My closet so full of things I don't want You to see
If You knew all about me You'd question my belief
I know I haven't paid for each of the mistakes I make
So, thank you for keeping secrets, Lord
Let me just say

Couldn't help but notice something
That just keeps happening
It doesn't make much sense to me
But He does it again and again

Lord, I promise this is really the last time
(We've all said these words)
Sorry for not praying, it must have slipped my mind
(I never wanted You to hurt)

If You get me out of this one
I'll never do it again
When will I learn my lesson?
What would life be if I ran out of chances?

Uncover, expose me
That's the only way that I'll be free
Make me uncomfortable
Even if there's something I don't wanna see

I don't wanna live outside Your will, oh no
I've said it a thousand times
And I really wanna get it right

Lord, I promise this is really the last time
(We've all said these words)
Sorry for not praying, it must have slipped my mind
(I never wanted You to hurt)

If You get me out of this one
I'll never do it again
When will I learn my lesson?
Where will life be if I ran out of chances?

Where is your heart?

"Search me, O God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24
Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life." -Psalms 139:23-24

Sometimes you just have to take a step back and breathe.  These past few months, I have been the busiest I've ever been in my life.  Between ministry, work, family and friends I've been attempting to stretch my 5'5 self in about 1,000 different directions...and let's just say, it hasn't been working.  At first it was all good, but after attempting over and over to be in three different places at one time, I started to feel burnt out.  In my efforts to please everyone, I learned that you can't always say, "yes."  I mean really, what good is it be present but not be effective?  Even worse, I was finding myself drained in my ministry work.  I was learning the hard way that you can't pour out the Word to others if you're not taking the time to have the Word poured into you.  Eventually my fuel started to run out and I began to run strictly on fumes.....I became physically, emotionally and spiritually drained.

"...for me, obligation is my commitment to people, obedience is my commitment to God."

As Christians, when we begin to feel "burnt out" it starts to form a blurred line between doing things out of obedience and doing things out of obligation.  What's the difference you ask?  Your heart. I associate the word, "obedience" with love.  The Bible tells us in, John 14:15, "if you love me, obey My commandments."  See although both words still equal commitment, for me, obligation is my commitment to people, obedience is my commitment to God.  I was finding myself more committed to my friends and family than I was to the One I deemed as Lord over my life.

"In essence, I was giving God what was left of me after I had already given my best to other people."

I take pride in being a great friend, but it was never God's intent to spend so much time serving others and leave little to no time to commune with Him.  In essence, I was giving God what was left of me after I had already given my best to other people.  This is also where we can become more susceptible to sin.  Often times when we feel drained and burnt out we begin to see church and all other ministry enthused activities as a "job" and we start to serve others grudgingly as if it's a burden.  Right where satan wants us, in a place where we begin to lose our desire to serve and please God.  Wow.  What first started as a delight is now becoming a duty and we come to a point where we would just rather be spiritual couch potatoes because it's too draining to actively serve in ministry.  Again, what good is it to be actively involved in ministry and not effective?

"Are we more concerned about what people think than what God thinks?"

Sometimes we have to ask God to search our hearts.  Take a deep dive into even the most hidden places of our lives and test our true intentions.  Are we confusing pleasing people with pleasing God?  Are we more concerned about what people think than what God thinks? Now, don't get me wrong, the Bible clearly says that we are to love one another, however in our efforts to love and to be loved by others, we can unknowingly be placing them on the same or higher pedestal as Christ in our hearts.

To all my friends and family, bear with me if I seem distant for a little while.  I'm using this time to not make any commitments to people, but rather allow God to show me the areas on my heart that need to be more committed to Him.  Every now and then we need a heart check so we can put back in perspective that we're ultimately only called to serve people out of our service unto God.

Remember this simple formula: God > Everyone else.

I just wanted to take time out to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has not only supported my writing, but me personally over the last two years.  Every phone call, text, comment, "like" on Facebook/Instagram and Retweet is GREATLY appreciated.  It's a blessing when you can be a blessing to someone else.

Continue to pray for me that I become more consistent with posting the things that God lays on my heart.  I truly wanted this blog to help encourage others and I hope that it continues to do just that.

Not sure what God is going to reveal to me on this go round, but that's the beauty of it, right? :-)

Flawed.

"When Jesus heard this, He told them, 'Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.'” -Mark 2:17

Now I respect Beyonce as much as the next person, but I have to admit...her latest cd has a lot of people feeling invincible.  Beyonce's song flawless has a lot of females thinking they wake up looking like perfection and well let's just be honest....we don't look like what we think we look like.

I'm not perfect. I don't always feel pretty, I don't always say the right things or make the most Godly-decisions. I get angry. I've cursed. I get annoyed easily. I've pushed some really great people away because I didn't know how to receive their love. I've ended some really great relationships because I was the one who wasn't mature enough to handle it. I've turned down great opportunities because I didn't think I was "good enough" for the assignment. I've been angry with God and voluntarily walked away because I couldn't understand "why?"  I've lied. I've cheated on multiple tests. I've hurt people. I've used people. I've called people out of their name. I've gossiped. I've worshiped things and people other than God. I've had impure thoughts. I've committed covetousness in my heart. I've been drunk too many times to count.

....and to think....He still wants me.

I'm proud to say that since I've turned my life over to Christ, some of these sins are no longer struggles, but I am still far from perfect.  However, that's the beauty of God. He meets us where we are and He builds us up.  See, as long as we're all "flawless" people, we can never be used by God. Sometimes we can get to a place where we think we are so "together" that we're above sin. We think we've achieved this spiritual high place and we no longer need to seek Jesus for guidance because "we got this."  But our imperfections are a clear reminder of why we are in need of a Savior. Our weaknesses are indicators of areas in our lives that we need to be more like Christ. Without Christ I would be a total wreck. I would have given up on myself a long time ago, but His love won't let me. I'm so glad that despite ALLLLL of my shortcomings, God...still...wants...me. Christ didn't come to save the flawless, He came to save the flawed....and we're all flawed.

Hiding the Pain

"Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you."
      -1 Peter 5:7

For a while, I continued to wake up feeling groggy and congested every morning.  Initially I thought I was just catching a head cold, but after catching this “head cold” about four times in the past two months, I think it’s safe to say…I needed to see a doctor.  I was experiencing all of the symptoms of a cold, but it just wouldn’t seem to go away. I was so tired of feeling miserable everyday that I decided to go to……..Google. I mean that's logically the first thing to do, right? Now, if you’ve ever gone to Google and typed in your symptoms, let me be the first to break you the bad news: you have 5 days to live.  It doesn’t matter what you enter, it doesn’t matter how mild the symptoms are….if Google is involved, it will say you have a rare disease that only affects 0.2% of the population and you will die.  I’m not lying….try it!

"It's difficult to get an accurate consultation on a medical condition without having the doctor fully examine you...."

After reading Google, and apparently finding out I had one week left to live, I decided to FINALLY schedule an appointment with my actual doctor to find out what was really going on with me. After my doctor asked me a few specific questions, checked my blood pressure, heart rate and lungs, it turns out I just have bad allergies.  She prescribed me a few pills and I was on my way.  See while Google is the world’s leading search engine and knows just about everything, it was never designed to take the place of a real physician.  It’s difficult to get an accurate consultation on a medical condition without having the doctor fully examine you to discover where the real pain is occurring. It’s kind of ironic how the person with the most experience and that can offer the most insight on our medical needs is the person we revert to as a last resort.  What’s even more ironic, is how we treat God the same way.

"...for some reason our first impulse is to seek advice from people instead of going to the very One who has the power to control the winds and the waves."

When we start to experience pain-like symptoms in our life, for some reason our first impulse is to seek advice from people instead of going to the very One who has the power to control the winds and the waves.  Don’t get me wrong, the Bible says in Proverbs 20:18 that it’s wise to seek Godly counsel. However,we should never let our mother, father, friend or even pastor take the place of us bringing everything that concerns us to God first.  Too often we let other influences guide our decisions, but it’s Christ who knows exactly what we need.  What I love about my doctor is she knows exactly the right questions to ask, she knows the different types of conditions and most importantly, she knows exactly how to treat them.   She’s studied the human body, she knows how it’s supposed to function and can automatically tell when something isn’t working the way it’s supposed to.  My doctor is successful at her job because that’s what she’s been trained to do.

".....I had to learn how to be completely honest with the true condition of my heart."

Well I’m so glad that I have another Primary Physician that knows me better than I know myself. That literally designed me from dust and put each piece of me together.  Who not only knows how to treat my physical body, but knows how to examine my heart.  However, in order to get this medicine that only He can provide, I had to learn how to be completely honest with the true condition of my heart.  My doctor could only prescribe me the right medicine after I told her specifically where I was experiencing the pain.  We can’t pull fast ones on God.  He knows our thoughts before they even reach our brains, he sees what we did yesterday and what we’re planning to do tomorrow.  Before we can expect God to fully treat us, we first have to stop hiding our pain.  The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:7 to, "cast all of our cares on the Lord for He cares."

"God wants us to take everything that's concerning us to Him in prayer."

We have to stop trying to heal ourselves and stop depending on other sick people’s advice.  God wants us to take everything that’s concerning us to Him in prayer.  So stop walking around sick and in need of medicine.  Make an appointment with the ultimate Physician and let Him examine you and find out what areas in your life are causing you the most pain. Allow Him to perform open heart surgery and prescribe you the right medicine in His Word.

15 Things I'm Learning at 25

1. Destroy self-doubt at all costs.
You can have all the support in the world, but all of that means nothing if you don't believe in you. It not only causes you to miss out on great opportunities, but it mentally paralyzes you from accomplishing all the things God has called you to do. Not a good look. The gifts God has blessed you with could literally be someone else’s medicine, so stop telling yourself you “can’t” do something.  Someone else’s life could depend on it.

1 1/2. Have encouraging friends.
Speaking of support…..make sure the people you have in your life aren’t staying there rent free. At 25 I've realized the true value of a friendship isn't in who looks the best standing together in pictures
, it's who can add life to my life. Ask yourself this question: am I better because of this friendship? Any answer other than "yes" is a no and well a no means it's time to let them go.

2. Be on time! [or try really hard]
I'm definitely the pot calling the kettle black for this one.  At Hampton University we had a saying, "To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late and to be late is unacceptable." We are now into the “professional” stage and after a certain age it's just not cute to be late. Well, unless it's a social event. Or if it's an awkward gathering and you'll be forced to talk to the other early people there...then it's okay to be late.  Matter of fact just be on time for church, work and interviews. Definitely interviews.

3. Spending daily quiet time with Jesus is vital.
We’ve all been bamboozled into thinking that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I would like to say that’s false.  Your quiet time with Christ is the most important meal of the day.  The Word of God is literally food for our soul. Let me be very blunt: GOING TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY MORNING IS NOT ENOUGH. What would we look like or feel like if we only ate one meal a week? Unfortunately, some of us suffer from spiritual eating disorders because we’re not getting a well balanced diet of the Word. We (me included) have got to stop fitting Jesus into our schedule and start fitting our schedules around Jesus. He doesn’t enhance our life, He is life.  Amen?

4. Take care of your body.
The time for eating whatever you want and then going to bed is over. Take care of your body. Change doesn't come over night but it does come in one decision. Make an effort to workout at least twice a week. Also watch what you eat. Only go to Outback once a week instead of three. :-) Incorporate more vegetables in your diet AND DRINK MORE WATER! (This entire section was really written specifically for me).

5. Singing your heart out relieves stress.

If you tell me you don't put on full concerts in the shower or go completely IN while you’re alone in your car stuck in traffic then we obviously could never be friends. I mean I’m no Beyoncè, but you definitely can't tell me I'm not when it's just me and my iPod. There are no better acoustics than the studio in your shower. You're the one that's crazy if you think otherwise lol

6. Don’t keep making the same mistakes.
A while back I was given some of the most freeing advice that I’ve ever received. “It’s okay to make mistakes.”  This can get tricky but it is also the absolute, honest to goodness truth.  I think as Christians we’ve built this facade that we can’t mess up. While I don’t at ALL take this to mean actively go and look for trouble, there will be times when we don’t get it right.  Learn from them. Mistakes will happen, it’s inevitable, just never make the same mistake twice, because then it becomes a choice.

7. Be serious about your dreams.
Stop asking God to invest in what you’re not willing to invest for yourself.  Yes, we absolutely can do all things through Christ that gives us strength….but the keyword is do.  God is not our personal assistant or even worse, He’s not our slave.  God planted specific desires in each of us that He ultimately wants to use for His glory so He's giving you what you need to accomplish them.  It’s not always that people don’t believe in your dreams, it’s just that at some point you have to actively start pursuing them. Remember, faith without works is dead. So start proving the doubters wrong and start walking out on faith.

8. Build on your strengths.
Which brings me to my next point….know your strengths. We live in a society where we're so focused on what we lack rather than what we actually do bring to the table. For years I tried to develop my weaknesses, but imagine how much more effective we could be if we would build upon our strengths. The truth is we’re not going to be the masters of everything.  There will be some things that we just won’t be able to excel in…..and that’s okay! Surround yourself with people who make up for what you lack and vice versa.  Stop secretly asking God to make you another person and learn how to be the most effective person you already are.

9. Learn how to encourage yourself.
A few years ago, Sheri Jones-Moffett came out with a song that still plays on gospel radio stations across the country: Encourage Yourself. It’s a great song, but did you know that this is actually scripture?  The Bible tells us in 1 Samuel 30:6 (KJV), that after King David was under attack and being threatened, he "encouraged himself in the Lord." We all have our days where the glass is half empty, but we have to learn how to speak life into our own lives.  Your mom might not have the right words one day and your best friend may not pick up the phone. It’s in those moments you’ve got to learn how tell yourself to keep going.  Learn the Word and then apply the Word for YOU!

10. Set your alarm and pray for your family and friends.
I’m strong believer that there’s no better gift to offer someone then the gift of prayer.  If you really love your friends and family and want them to do well….pray for them.  Every prayer shouldn’t be about you and your situation, your friends and family have situations too. Pray for them.  While you’re at it….pray for your enemies too.  You never know what someone else is going through. Ugly attitudes are just a reflection of the internal pain that they’re experiencing.  I’m not saying be their friend….but even the ugliest heart is worth our prayer.

11. Know when to walk away.
We’re all guilty for continuing to water dead plants, but there comes a time where you have to realize when something has stopped growing. It sucks to be hurt in a situation, but sometimes we could have avoided the whole thing by just walking away. The Bible tells us in Matthew 7:20 that just as you identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify a person by their actions.  We know an apple tree because it bears apples.  If someone’s tree is bearing anything other than what they’re claiming it to, take that as your cue to walk…no run away.

12. Always trust God’s timing.
Staying on the subject of fruit….eating it out of its proper season could be poisonous. We live in a society where everything has to be microwaved and even fast food takes too long. This is dangerous, because we tend to get impatient and make our own things happen.   But, here’s the problem: time means nothing to God, but yet His timing means everything. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, "God has made everything beautiful for its own time." We may not understand God’s methods, but we can be confident that however He works it out….and whenever He works it out, it will be the very best possible thing for us.

13. Stop taking social media so seriously.
Although we may really think it at times, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are not bible. It is not the standard to everyday living and it is certainly not everyone’s reality.  Keep in mind that people only show you what they want you to see. So the next time you land on someone’s profile and think, “Gosh I wish I had his/her life” know that they’re struggling with something just like you.  Oh and never give your phone to a non-Instagram-mer.  They don’t know the rules and they WILL double tap.

14. Always remain thankful.
Life gets rough sometimes and it’s very easy to look at all the things you don’t have rather than what you do have.  I’ve often found myself asking God for more only to realize, I wasn’t being a good steward over what He already gave me.  If we’re faithful over a few He’ll make us ruler over many. Also, a thankful heart extends past all of our material desires; we must learn to be thankful in each in every situation we face.  The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Jesus Christ."  Even in the worst of situations, remember there’s always a reason to be thankful.

15. Tomorrow is not promised.
I hate to bring on the subject of death, but the truth is we all have an expiration date.  So having said that….LIVE LIFE! Not carelessly, but unapologetically. The most common misconception about Christians is they don’t know how to have fun.  I’m not sure what Christians you surround yourself with, but me and my friends have a blast. (Yeah I know I just said blast, but I honestly couldn’t think of any other word.  I know that also didn’t help my case lol.) Your time on earth is temporary, so what are you doing to make an impact?  At 25 I’ve realized that it’s not my life goal to own a certain car, live in a certain size house or make a certain amount of money (okay, still working on the last one hehe) but my biggest heart’s desire is to make a difference. You only get one life on earth, make the absolute most out of it…..and not just for your own pleasure, but to help change the world of someone else.

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.' ”- Erma Bombeck
